There’s a short report in the Guardian today in which a Vatican official tells paedophile priests to expect damnation.
It’s good that the guy is standing up and saying this but there’s a problem with all this hellfire and damnation sermon stuff.
I don’t think anyone believes in it.
I don’t even think the catholic priests who are being threatened with it believe it.
If they believed that kind of punishment awaited them (as has been preached ad nauseam for centuries) then surely their faith and conviction in that divine retribution ought to have been enough to ensure they behaved?
I’m betting that the reality is they’re all relying on that “whosoever believeth in him” stuff they’ve been taught being the ultimate get-into-heaven-free card.
Perhaps they all need to read John 3 in their holy book a little more carefully?
