I have to confess to issuing a less than charitable laugh when, on Sunday last, I heard that Rage Against The Machine had indeed landed the Christmas number one spot.

Obviously Killing In The Name is as festive as smack from a fat, bald, orange bloke but the campaign to get it to the top of the charts does make a point about how predictably dull the charts have become. There used to be a real buzz about the Christmas number one but those days are long gone and have become obscured by the plasticized pap peddled by Cowell, Cole, and company.

I’m looking forward to hearing the release version of the contender for next year’s Christmas number one as proposed by Charlie Brooker. Though I suspect the reality is that we’ll all end up being subjected to another X Factor analgesic instead.
