Too Close For Comfort

Hibernian 1-1 Rangers

I was delighted to see the above final score when I checked the sport headlines last night. As a result of another FAIL, Rangers have relinquished top spot in the SPL to Celtic but only because of Celtic’s marginally better goal difference:

Team P W D L F A W D L F A GD PTS
1 Celtic 36 14 3 1 48 13 10 5 3 32 20 47 80
2 Rangers 36 14 2 2 42 14 10 6 2 30 13 45 80

(source BBC Sport)

This places Celtic back in control with 2 games to play … but only just. Celtic play Hibs away and then have Hearts at home on the last day of the season. Rangers play Aberdeen at home next but are away to Dundee United for their final game.

I think Rangers may have things slightly harder as both Aberdeen and Dundee United will be out to secure a top 4 finish. Dundee United are almost there and beating Rangers on the last day would secure at least 4th place. Dundee United have also been a bit of a bogey team for the Old Firm recently. But Celtic will not have it easy facing either side of the Edinburgh divide, both of whom will be looking to spoil the party.

Could the title race be any closer?

  1. Has splitting the league near the end of the season been a good, bad or indifferent thing, do you think?

  2. Iain,

In general I think it’s a bad thing. You’ve also given made me think enough on this one that I sense a full length post on the subject marching this way. Watch this space for more.

    Cheers,
    Alex
