Just read a rather uplifting NYT article about American atheists who are shouting their lack of belief from the rooftops. It’s good to hear of such positive activities on behalf of my fellow non-believers. I particularly like the closing paragraph about Pastafarian students offering free hugs to their fellows.
My feelings towards America took a bit of a nose-dive during the Bush years because of his tendency towards the religious right – which at times struck me as dangerously fundamental. Hopefully the positive actions of groups such as the Secular Coalition for America will help to demonstrate that not believing in god can be a good thing and that there is no reason to hide your lack of belief. They are certainly helping to reverse my unease about the power of America’s religious right.
