I’m not even sure there will be much excitement – though there will be a lot of nervous nail-biting as the tension mounts.
The last SPL game between Celtic & Rangers was not a great spectacle as both sides were more interested in not losing as evidenced by the 0-0 score. You can understand that, I suppose, given how close things are in the league this season. But that approach does not bode well for this weekend even though Bertie Auld is urging the Bhoys to turn on the style.
I’m expecting the final to be a cagey affair. Celtic will want to make sure Rangers can’t win the treble this year and will also want to further dent Rangers confidence, a fragile thing at the moment, and so gain the upper-hand in the SPL. The Bhoys will also be looking to bounce back after being knocked out of the Scottish Cup by St. Mirren. Rangers will be looking to boost their confidence by taking the first trophy of the season and using this as a springboard to overhaul Celtic’s tenuous 3 point SPL lead. But most of all, neither side will want to lose!
As for a prediction of the outcome? I reckon that a draw after 90 minutes is the most likely outcome and that extra-time won’t change things. So it will all come down to the lottery of the dreaded penalty shoot-out. If it does go to penalties then I favour Celtic to come out on top because Artur Boruc will save at least one – if he’s on form for the day he’ll save two and in the worst case scenario, he’ll score one!
