This was the reason that we paid a very brief visit to Edinburgh during our travels last week.
Despite having to struggle through Edinburgh traffic, which caused us to arrive late, we made it to Holyrood Palace for a spot of afternoon tea with the Queen.
Well, okay, it wasn’t really ‘with’ the Queen but she was there and we were invited and we did have tea…along with several thousand others. And very pleasant it was too. The weather was decent, the cucumber sandwiches were slightly minty, the cakes nice and moist, and the ice cream both creamy and cold.
I’m pretty sure that some of the crowd could be classed as social climbers but I didn’t see any ladders being polished, nor did I see any wayward sons reunited with their fathers. But then this wasn’t quite the same as the garden party lampooned by Fish back in his Marillion days.
