…and so he should! I watched the cup semi-final between Rangers and St. Johnstone yesterday and the Saints would have deserved it if they’d won. Rangers did not deserve to win – not on the strength of the first 90 minutes, not on their showing in 30 minutes of extra time, and certainly not on penalties.
Rangers were dreadful! In fact, it has been a long time since I have seen such a poor side doing so well. At times, I reckon that this Rangers side are actually worse (or at least no better) in terms of quality than the side that played under Paul Le Guen. The difference really is down to Walter Smith as a manager – he is simply one of the best around.
Dundee United were the better team in last months CIS Cup Final and still Rangers managed to steal that cup in a penaly shoot out.
They will probably beat Queen Of The South in the Scottish Cup Final next month, though their growing list of injuries and increasingly congested fixture list may still conspire against them. That would give them the cup double in Scotland.
They could also make it all the way to the UEFA cup final. Though I believe Fiorentina will beat them over the two legs of their semi-final. So a quadruple haul of trophies is unlikely but still a worrying possibility if Rangers’ luck holds.
However that leaves the matter of the SPL title and a possible treble. Celtic now lead the SPL by 2 points thanks to a win against Aberdeen, although Rangers have 3 games in hand. I still think that Celtic can win the SPL this year, especially if they beat Rangers again this Sunday. In that case, the pressure would really be piling up for the Ibrox side and I think they will crack under that strain.
