YHY 101 or 101 YHY?

I was told yesterday that car manufacturers use the number plate YHY 101 quite a lot in their advertising. This, apparently, is so they can show the same advert in different countries irrespective of which side of the road you drive on in each country. They just flip the footage depending on whether the country uses right- or left-hand drive and the number plate still makes sense.

This sounded a bit like an urban myth until this evening. I saw a car ad featuring the number plate AV 818 HX and a right-hand drive car as used here in the UK. Flip the image and the plate becomes XH 818 VA – still readable but on a left-hand drive car!
