Microsoft seems to be wandering further and further into a wilderness of bugs, patches and fixes to fix fixes. I don’t know how many millions of lines make up the code that under-lies Windows but it seems as if that code is out of control.
I support a network of more than 300 PCs. They started updating themselves with update MS06-015 last week and the cries for help started coming in straight away.
“When I try and save a document, my PC hangs…”
We pulled the plug on the update but it was too late, the damage had been done.
Now we have the announcement that a fix for that fix is on its way. Its nice to know that. But what really pisses me off is that the original fix was supposedly a “critical” security patch. What are we supposed to do when we can’t even be sure our PCs will keep working after applying such essential fixes? How can we trust future security updates? And does anyone really believe that things will be any better when Vista hits the shelves?
By then there will be even more lines of code. More bugs lurking in the undergrowth. And still more security holes to be plugged…
